English Charles II Chest of Unusual Design with Star Inlay, circa 1680

Description
A late 17th century English Carolean or Restoration period provincial chest of unusual eye-dazzling design; the oak and pine case with molded top and five drawer fronts with fruitwood and ebonized oak 'mullet' or five-pointed star inlays, each drawer with brass hardware of round key escutcheon-plates and drop scroll-form pulls with elongated four-point star backplates.

Additional notes on condition:

Typical dormant worming to extremities, stable age cracking to drawer bottoms, non-detracting age shrinkage separation between top boards and slight warping. Piece is sturdy and very functional. Finely cast solid brass hardware is of later date but stylistically correct and complimentary. Inlay possibly of later date (18th/19th century) than initial construction. Wonderful piece.
