Description
Wood and Brass Console with Green Marble Top, Italian Manufacture, 1950s
This Italian console, perfect as a decorative piece paired with a mirror, serves well as a stylish surface. Reflecting the design trends of the 1950s, it aligns with the elegance and sophistication typical of the era. Figures like Paolo Buffa, the renowned Milanese architect and a leading figure in mid-century Italian design, were highly influential at the time. Few designers matched Buffa's ability to blend the sinuous curves of bourgeois furniture with modern intuition, subtly transforming mass-market taste by introducing a discreet sense of modernity into domestic spaces.
In line with Buffa's work, this console features stained wood in a classically inspired yet gracefully flowing design. The curved, splayed legs, ending in brass-capped feet, give the piece an overall sense of lightness. The sculpted wooden apron, adorned with a delicately raised undulating pattern, is equally pleasing and well-balanced. The overall intent behind the design of this piece is to successfully harmonize two contrasting materials with opposing properties. On one hand, there is wood—curved, slender, and expressive of lightness and fluidity. On the other, there is marble—a solid green slab of significant thickness, exuding a sense of rigor, gravity, and permanence.
The skillful blending of these two materials, finely balanced by a refined and thoughtful design, is a rare find. Incorporating this console into your interior design adds a distinctive touch of personality and character to any room.
