Description
An exquisite Russian silver bonbonniere in the Empire style, crafted in St Petersburg in 1837 by the distinguished Finnish master silversmith Thomas Sohka (1804-1865). This refined work is a characteristic example of Russian decorative silver of the late Empire period, distinguished by its architectural clarity of composition, harmonious proportions and exceptional standard of craftsmanship. The form is defined by the balanced symmetry and restrained monumentality that are hallmarks of the Empire aesthetic. The bowl rests upon a stable circular foot, while the elegantly modelled handle creates a perfectly balanced silhouette, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the piece. Decorative enrichment is achieved through a refined combination of classical restraint and delicately modelled ornament. Floral garlands together with finely executed acroterial motifs at the handle mounts introduce an added degree of elegance while subtly foreshadowing the decorative vocabulary that would later develop into the Historicist style. Thomas Sohka, active in St Petersburg from 1836, ranks among the most accomplished Finnish silversmiths working in the Imperial Russian capital. His works are distinguished by exceptional quality of execution, precision chasing and an accomplished understanding of contemporary artistic taste. The present bonbonniere is an important example of his oeuvre and represents a highly desirable object for collectors of Russian Imperial silver as well as museum collections devoted to nineteenth-century decorative arts. Hallmarks: Maker's mark TS for Thomas Sohka. St Petersburg city assay mark. 84 zolotnik silver standard. Assay master's mark DT with the date 1837. Dimensions: To be confirmed. Weight: 224 g.
